Protecting all children

At Arden Forest Infant School, safeguarding and child protection is paramount and we are fully committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all our children.

Mrs Gunn (Headteacher) is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). However, we also have a team of staff whose roles include Deputy Designated Safeguarding leads, Pastoral Lead and Online Safety.

Our staff receive regular Safeguarding training to ensure that they are up to date on all aspects of child protection and safeguarding. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

We believe that all pupils have the right to learn in a caring, supportive and safe environment which includes the right to protections from all types of abuse; where staff are vigilant for signs of any potential harm or abuse, and are confident to apply the processes to raise any concerns to alleviate or avert any such safeguarding concern.

If there are any concerns, we work closely with both families and professionals such as Children’s Services in Warwickshire to support you, your child and family.

If you are experiencing any difficulties, please speak with our Pastoral Lead (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead) in the first instance, who may be able to signpost to the most relevant or appropriate services.

Prevent 

From 1 July 2015, all schools are subject to a duty under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, in the exercise of their functions, to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. This duty is known as the Prevent Duty for Schools.

At Arden Forest, we build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting British values and enabling our pupils to challenge extremist views.  There is a strong focus on ‘respect’ as well as ‘tolerance’ which underpin our Behaviour curriculum.

The statutory guidance refers to the importance of Prevent awareness training to equip staff to identify children at risk of being drawn into terrorism and to challenge extremist ideas. All our staff have Prevent training as part of a programme of Safeguarding training, to understand what Prevent is about and how to deal with any issues they may see inside or outside school.

Radicalisation is when someone starts to believe or support extreme views, and in some cases, then participates in extremist acts (including threats and intimidation, or violence). It can be motivated by a range of factors, including political beliefs and prejudices against particular groups of people, or religious beliefs or ideologies. 

Anyone can be radicalised, but factors such as being easily influenced and impressionable make children and young people particularly vulnerable. Children who are at risk of radicalisation will often have low self-esteem or be victims of bullying or discrimination.  

Radicalisation of children and young people is child abuse and should be treated as a child protection issue.
